GOLDEN APPLE NOMINEES

Congratulations to Golden Apple nominees: Miss Stanley, Mrs. Woods and Mrs. Murphy! Each of these teachers was lauded with a letter from a student/parent, nominating them for the award.  One nominee is chosen to represent each school for the awards. A committee will soon make a decision for our SPS nominee. If our nominee is chosen at the diocesan level, she will be honored at a special dinner, and will receive a cash award as well as a Golden Apple pin.  To be nominated is a wonderful honor! Good luck to each of you.

SPELLING BEE RESULTS

The annual SPS Spelling Bee was one for the records as two of our students battled it out for at least an hour beyond the regular time.  Our winner is Jonathan K. and runner up is Neya S.. Congratulations to you both!  Each of our spellers gave it his/her best during this (possibly) 102nd annual Bee!  Johnathan will represent St. Paul School as he moves on to the regional Bee at GlenOak High School on March 3rd. St. Paul Speller Jacob V. set the standard two years ago when he won the district Bee and competed in Washington DC. Since then, it seems our spellers are out to match that victory!

MORNING DROP OFF PROCEDURES

At least annually, I review car rider drop off/pick up and safety procedures. It's that time once again.  Please read carefully. If you have any questions, email Mrs. Zufall at jzufall@stpaulncanton.org. Students who arrive before 7:15 as part of our early arrival courtesy program are to be dropped off at either the main office entrance or the library entrance. As no teachers are on duty at that time, please either walk your child in or watch your child until he/she enters the building. Early arrival students proceed directly to the library. Cameras at both entrances allow office personnel to view your child as he/she enters. At 7:15, early arrival students are escorted to the gym. Other students who are dropped off by parents between 7:15 and 7:30 are to go to the gym. The best drop off place is at Kevin's Way by the mobile unit between A and B buildings. Parents have the option of parking and walking students to the gym door. A teacher is on duty in the gym. At 7:25, 25 minutes before school begins, two teachers are on duty outside: one at the NW parking lot at the top of the stairs and one in the C building area, either by the door, along the sidewalk, or at the gate area. Students are released from the gym to walk to classrooms at 7:30. Some safety reminders: Have your child exit your car on the passenger side.  It's dangerous for children to cross in front of or in back of the car! Please wait your turn...don't pass other cars. Don't permit your child to walk across moving car lines. Wait until you arrive at the sidewalk and have your child exit there. Drop your child off all along the sidewalk leading to C building. This helps to keep the lines moving. Instruct your child to wait until your car is fully stopped before exiting your car. Wait until you see your child safely on the sidewalk before pulling away. Sometimes things fall out of the car or the door needs another good slam...and your child may be vulnerable to your moving vehicle. If you walk your child to the building, please keep your child by your side. Don't allow him/ her to run ahead. We have a campus...not one building! Your cooperation and assistance is appreciated.

HOT LUNCH REQUEST

My name is Jennifer Friedl, and I am a parent at St. Paul School. The hot lunch program is in urgent need of help on the 1st & 3rd Wednesday of every month. We have recently lost several moms due to job commitments and we are currently down to only 4 hot lunch helpers on these days. Hot lunch is a wonderful program that we offer here at St. Paul and the children look forward to getting a hot lunch several days a week. As a parent, it is a great way to volunteer and see your child during the day at school. We welcome any parent or grandparent to consider helping with the hot lunch program so we can continue to offer this service. It is required that any school volunteer must complete the Treasured Gifts from God class and the BCI fingerprinting check before they are able to help at any school activity. Luckily, St. Paul is offering this class on Tues.Dec. 13th from 6:30-8:30 for anyone interested. By attending this short class you will be able to help out at the hot lunch program and many other events that come up throughout the school year. But most importantly you can volunteer to serve hot lunch....on the 1st & 3rd Wednesday of each month....and see your cute, little, hungry children....on the 1st & 3rd Wednesday of each month...OH! and did I mention we feed you,too....on the 1st & 3rd Wednesday of each month. So please consider helping with hot lunch so we can continue to provide this program to our students.

If you have any questions about the hot lunch program.... how it works? how much time is involved?do you have to do any cooking?can I bring my toddler? Please call me and I would be happy to answer your concerns. I have been a hot lunch mom for 14 years and I have thoroughly enjoyed serving the students, meeting other moms and dads, and seeing my boys during the school day.

< Please call me at my home for questions about becoming a hot lunch parent. (330)966-1174 Questions concerning the Treasured Gifts from God class and BCI fingerprinting contact the school office (330)494-0223 Thank you, Jennifer Friedl

Volunteer families (any number or makeup) are invited to light the Advent wreath at St. Paul's for Saturday and Sunday Masses during Advent. This is a beautiful family tradition to have during this holy season.  Families are asked to sit in the reserved front pew directly in front of the altar and light the candle before Mass begins. Families should check with the priest upon arrival at Mass for any details. CHESS CLUB ADVISOR

We have at least one student each day ask about the Chess Club. We can't have a club without your help! If you would be willing to organize the meetings, find parent helpers, etc., please contact Mrs. Zufall and/or the school office asap. Mr. Jim Satrape, past Chess advisor, is willing to point you in the right direction.

BUS BEHAVIOR

I have heard from bus drivers of two separate districts that our students are not behaving on the bus. Maybe expectations are higher for our students (I wouldn't have it any other way!)...Maybe our students are expressing their close feeling of contentment in their school community ( I wouldn't have it any other way!)...maybe they are letting out a little steam from working so hard in school (I wouldn't have it any other way)...HOWEVER, each child's behavior reflects on the entire student body. I'm speaking to students this week. Please reinforce my message at home. Some talking points: -Keep hands, heads, items inside the windows                 -Keep the bus aisle clear -Be on time                                                                    -Use a quiet voice -Don't push or shove                                                       -Listen to the driver -Stay seated                                                                   -Greet your driver

  REQUESTS, REMINDERS AND RULES

Parents, it's time for a few housekeeping reminders:

             UNIFORM REMINDERS

Parents, its time to check your child's uniform. Some areas to pay particular attention to: Hair length: boys' hair should be off of the collar; trimmed from ears and eyebrows. Skirt length: skirts, skorts, jumpers are to be no shorter than two inches above the top of the knee. Athletic shoes: Must be plain / one solid color of black or white. Headbands: solid navy, burgundy, black, white or matching uniform plaid only. Please be sure to check the Schoolbelles website for St. Paul School to view examples of our uniform pieces. These are the only exceptable styles students may wear. Thank you for your cooperation.

VACATIONS

Due to parents' work schedules we understand that some families must arrange family vacations during the school year. It is a diocesan policy that teachers do not provide school work for students to complete while on vacation. St. Paul adheres to this policy. Students may have the number of days missed plus a day to turn in missed work once they return to school.

SECURITY AND SAFETY

Recently, a number of concerns have come to my attention regarding students in buildings after school hours. This includes students going back into classrooms after hours to retrieve missed work or books, students wandering in the halls, and unsupervised children in the church and church gathering area during parent meetings. Fr. Jay and I worry about the safety of your children and the security of our buildings.

Therefore:

No children will be permitted in the buildings after school hours.  Students will not be permitted to retrieve books, papers or forgotten items from classrooms. Students who are involved in after school activities, including clubs and sports, are to be supervised at all times by the teacher, parent or coach in charge.  If you have students under your supervision, please do not allow them to roam halls and classrooms at will or to retrieve items.  Parents, please be on time when picking up your child from an activity. This is being courteous to those who have volunteered their time. Unfortunately, Latchkey cannot babysit children who are not part of the program

Parents, we highly value the time and energy you put forth as volunteers on all the many projects that benefit our school and parish. We also recognize that, in order to volunteer, you often times must bring your little ones with you.  Please make sure that you have either an adult babysitter or older student (7th/8th grader) to watch children.  A good ratio is 1 adult/older student: 5 children.  Thank you so much for your cooperation. LETTER REGARDING THE STARK COUNTY CATHOLIC SCHOOLS

September 8, 2011

Dear Friends,

I want to inform you of some very exciting news which will be happening with our Catholic schools in Stark County.

Over the past two years, the Stark County Schools Planning Committee has been working on a variety of issues facing our schools now and in the future. The Committee is composed of many dedicated parents, principals, teachers, and pastors. As a result of their hard work, the Committee, the pastors, and the  Office of Catholic Schools have recommended to the Bishop the creation of a regional Catholic school system comprised of elementary schools in Stark County. Bishop George Murry has approved this recommendation.

It is the Bishop’s conviction that our Catholic schools are an essential and important ministry of our Church. We appreciate the support of Bishop Murry and the entire United States Conference of Catholic Bishops who, in their 2005 Recommitment to Catholic Elementary and Secondary Schools in the Third Millennium, stated that “Our Catholic schools afford the fullest and best opportunity to realize the fourfold purpose of Christian education, namely to provide an atmosphere in which the Gospel message is proclaimed, community in Christ is experienced, service to our sisters and brothers is the norm, and thanksgiving and worship of God is cultivated.”

As the Bishop has stated, it is essential that the entire Diocese collaborate in support of all of our Catholic schools. This lays the groundwork for mutual support to happen for the benefit of the Stark County Catholic schools. I firmly believe that, as a result of this action, Catholic school education inStark County will have a stronger, more viable future. In order to provide sufficient time for effective local planning, this new regional school system will begin operations for the 2013-14 school year. The Office of Catholic Schools in working with the pastors will do our best to maintain all the schools we have while we are completing the planning process.

The school system will have a two-tiered governance structure with the upper board comprised of the Diocesan Bishop, the Vicar General, the Diocesan Chief Financial Officer, the Diocesan Superintendent, and the participating pastors. Dr. Michael Skube will work with the Stark County Schools Planning Committee, the Office of Catholic Schools, and the upper board to establish a Board of Directors. The upper board will appoint the Board of Directors which will begin its work in January 2012. Dr. Skube will work with the Board of Directors to plan and establish a regional school system, for the 2013-14 school year. We are going to utilize the president/principal model of administration which is in place in successful Catholic schools across the nation. The President will be hired by July 1, 2013 to work with the Board of Directors and oversee the new school system. Dr. Skube will work with the Board of Directors until the President begins his/her position. The principals in each school will be responsible for the administration of the individual schools and will work together under the supervision of the President. The Board of Directors and the President will work together on institutional advancement activities such as marketing, fundraising, development, strategic planning, and financial management.

We want to express our deep appreciation for the members of the Stark County Schools Planning Committee, the area pastors and principals who worked tirelessly for over a year, contributing greatly to this recommendation which the Bishop approved.

We have very high hopes and expectations that this new organization and governance and administrative structures will create a very viable and exciting Catholic school system in a way that best serves our present and future families in the 21st century.

Sincerely yours,

Nicholas M. Wolsonovich, Ph.D.

RACE FOR EDUCATION

A chairperson or co-chairs are needed to run this year's Race for Education. The "race" is in May and our past chairs are willing to guide you with the responsibilities of this fundraiser. Our first year in 2010 -2011, we paid a 20% commission for the guidance and materials to run the program. Starting this year and for races into the future, all the money we earn goes to St. Paul School. Last year we made over $27,000 and, with your help, we can make this year even better! New parents - "old" parents? Consider chairing this worthwhile fundraiser. St. Paul School does not engage in selling wrapping paper, candy and other items all year long. We rely on 2 - 3 large fundraising efforts but we need your help to maximize our efforts. If you have questions or if you would like to volunteer, please call Mrs. Jackie Zufall at 330 - 494 -0223. Thank you!

About St. Paul School:

St. Paul Catholic School is a private school located in North Canton, OH; recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence, St. Paul's annually graduates students fully prepared both academically and spiritually for life outside of its cozy halls.

We are well known for cultivating positive Catholic identity, developing the whole person, and providing learning in a safe and loving atmosphere of care and concern. What is central to the school is the Gospel message of Jesus and providing excellence in education.

St. Paul School has a broad and rich curriculum. Classes, from Pre-K through 8th grade, begin with the basics but are continually enhanced and enriched with extra-curricular activities and learning. The curriculum includes the core subjects: religion, reading, math, social studies, science, language arts, as well as Spanish, physical education, computer technology, music, art, a gifted program, and special education accommodations.

Technology has provided opportunities for exciting teaching and learning. From the beginning, our students have had the benefit of a television station within the school. Middle school students produce the daily news as well as other high interest programs. Presently, though our students use Windows-based computers in the classrooms and the library. Teachers in grades 1-8 employ Smartboard technology in their classrooms.

The academic high school record of our students is one in which we take pride. Many of our alums have graduated with honors from college and graduate programs. While it is only a single measure of achievement, our students take nationally normed tests in grades 1-8 in order to have a broad gauge of our effectiveness. Our students do very well when compared to their peers nationally.

Among our after school offerings are Power of the Pen, Student Council, Science Fair, Choir, Football, Basketball, Volleyball, Track & Field, and Golf. To better assist the needs of today’s parents, St. Paul also has an after school care program and a hot lunch program.

St. Paul offers values and excellence in education. I invite you to visit the school and to understand our love and pride for St. Paul Catholic School. Please call and make an appointment. I will be happy to give you a tour.

Sincerely,

Jackie Zufall

Principal
