Introduction: The Hartville Migrant Council is a nonprofit 501(c) (3) organization established in the Hartville area in the late 1940's when the first migrant workers were brought from Jamaica to work on the fertile muck farms. In 1962, the Council was incorporated and also purchased a building, which is still used today, known as the Hartville Migrant Center.

The Migrant Council: As a corporation, the Migrant Council elects a Board of Trustees of 25 members. From the Board, an executive committee is chosen. The Board of Trustees, led by the Executive Committee, is responsible to develop, administer, and supervise the programs of the ministry.

Goals: The goals of the Migrant Council are:

1. To supply a Christian ministry to the migrant farm worker families in the Hartville area.

2. To work cooperatively with agencies and organizations in the area to serve the needs of the migrant farm workers.

3. To encourage in the migrant farm worker a sense of personal worth, belonging, and responsibility.

4. To enlighten the community to the opportunity and obligation of sharing equally all the benefits and warmth of community life.

A large and skilled agricultural labor force is needed during the summer months to plant and harvest the fields, often twice in one season. The Hartville migrants are seasonal agricultural workers skilled in planting, caring for, and harvesting vegetable crops.

2. How many migrant workers come to Hartville each year? Over recent summers, the number of migrants has averaged 375 men, women and children.

5. Where do the workers live? Typically, they reside in housing provided by the local produce growers.

2. Volunteer hours: review the volunteer opportunities in this document and choose a project to sponsor or a committee on which to serve.

3. Clothing: clean and in good repair; clean clothing for spring, summer, and fall. (for example: ladies' jeans, cotton slacks and shorts, cotton tops/blouses (long sleeves okay), Men's jeans, cotton shirts (long sleeves okay), baby clothes, diapers, boys and girls summer clothing, socks, underwear, shoes, and boots suitable for outdoor work and play.

4. Toiletries: toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap, deodorant, hand lotion, razors, shaving cream, shampoo, conditioner, and feminine napkins.

5. Paper products: toilet tissue, paper towels, and facial tissue.

6. Baby care products: diapers, lotions, wipes, shampoos, and powder.

7. Linens (colors preferred): towels, sheets, pillows, and blankets.

8. Household items: clean and in good repair cookware, tableware, cutlery, TVs, and radios.
